In 1997 an NIH consensus panel of scientists, researchers and practitioners reported on clinical studies that have demonstrated acupuncture as being effective for headaches, tennis elbow, myofascial pain, low back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Several processes have been proposed to explain acupuncture's effect on pain. Acupuncture points, called meridians, are thought to stimulate the central nervous system to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain.
In turn these chemicals either change the experience of pain or trigger other internal regulating systems.
